The Cost of Home Charging
Home charging is typically the cheapest way to charge your EV. Based on average UK electricity rates:
- Standard Rate: At 24p/kWh, charging a 60kWh battery costs approximately £14.40
- EV Tariff (off-peak): Many energy suppliers offer EV tariffs with overnight rates as low as 7p/kWh, reducing the same charge to just £4.20
- Solar: If you have solar panels and charge during the day, your cost can be effectively £0
Public Charging Costs
Public charging varies significantly:
- Slow/Fast (7-22kW): 30-45p/kWh on average
- Rapid (50kW+): 60-79p/kWh typically
- Ultra-Rapid (150kW+): 70-85p/kWh
Annual Savings Example
For a driver covering 10,000 miles per year in a car averaging 3.5 miles/kWh:
| Charging Method | Annual Cost |
|---|---|
| Home (standard rate) | £686 |
| Home (EV tariff) | £200 |
| Public rapid only | £2,057 |
That's a potential saving of over £1,800 per year by charging at home on an EV tariff!
