Do EV Chargers Need Maintenance?
EV chargers are generally low-maintenance devices, but some basic care will ensure reliable operation and extend their lifespan. Most quality chargers are designed to last 10+ years with minimal attention.
Regular Maintenance Tasks
Monthly
- Wipe down the unit with a damp cloth
- Check the cable for damage (cuts, fraying, kinks)
- Ensure the connector is clean and dry
- Test the charger is working correctly
Quarterly
- Check mounting is secure
- Inspect for water ingress (especially after heavy rain)
- Clean connector contacts if dirty
- Update firmware via app (if applicable)
Annually
- Visual inspection of all cables and connections
- Check RCD/RCBO trips correctly (test button)
- Professional inspection (recommended)
Common Issues and Solutions
- Charger won't start: Check circuit breaker, restart via app, check vehicle connection
- Slow charging: Check temperature (cold weather reduces speed), check power setting in app
- WiFi connection lost: Restart charger, check router, move router closer if possible
- Cable won't release: Ensure vehicle is unlocked, check for ice in winter
When to Call a Professional
Contact your installer or an electrician if you notice:
- Burning smell or visible damage
- Charger trips circuit breaker repeatedly
- Error codes that won't clear
- Physical damage from impact
