Good News for Renters
Yes, you can get an EV charger installed in a rental property! In fact, the OZEV grant specifically supports renters, providing up to £350 toward installation costs. The key is getting your landlord on board.
Approaching Your Landlord
When asking your landlord about installing an EV charger:
- Explain the benefits: EV chargers add value to the property and make it more attractive to future tenants
- Mention the grant: The installation may cost the landlord nothing if they claim the landlord portion of the grant
- Offer to contribute: Some landlords may agree if you share costs
- Get it in writing: Any agreement should be documented in your tenancy
Grant Options for Renters
There are two grant routes available:
Tenant Application
- You apply through the installer
- Up to £350 toward installation
- Requires landlord's written permission
- Charger stays with property when you leave
Landlord Application
- Landlord applies through installer
- Up to £350 per installation
- Can claim for multiple properties
- Landlord owns the equipment
What If Your Landlord Says No?
If your landlord refuses, consider these alternatives:
- Portable/mobile chargers that don't require installation
- Nearby public charging options
- Negotiating a charger as part of lease renewal
- Looking for a rental property with charging already installed
Legal Rights
Currently, tenants don't have a legal right to demand EV charger installation. However, the government is considering legislation to make this easier for renters. Watch this space for updates.
